Jairus C. Fairchild

Jairus Cassius Fairchild (December 27, 1801-October 24, 1862) was an American politician and businessman.[1]

Born in Granville, New York, he moved to Hudson, Ohio, where he was a merchant. Later he would move to Franklin Mills, Ohio for a brief time where he operated a tannery before relocating to Cleveland around 1834.[2] He then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1845 and then to Madison, Wisconsin. Fairchild had business interests in cranberries and the lumber industry and was president of a railroad. From 1848 to 1852, Fairchild was the first State Treasurer of the State of Wisconsin, and in 1856 was elected the first Mayor of the city of Madison, Wisconsin. Two of his sons Cassius, and Lucius were also active in Wisconsin politics.[3]
